Session call & preview ProductCamp Amsterdam '24

Richard

November 6, 2024

Just a few more nights of sleep until the day arrives—Product Camp Amsterdam ’24! It’s an unconference for product people, by product people, and we can’t stress that last part enough. Sure, we’ve got the legendary Marty Cagan on board, and he’s a tough act to follow. But here’s the deal: Product Camp is all about you—the community—and it wouldn’t be the same without awesome folks stepping up to host sessions.

So, whether you’ve got burning insights to share, painful lessons learned, or just want to dive into deep discussions, we encourage everyone to jump in. Attend sessions with curiosity, ask questions, share your experiences, and if you’re feeling bold—host a session yourself!

To get those creative gears turning, we’ve asked two session hosts to give you a sneak peek of what they’ll be covering. Check out their previews below, and get inspired to make this Product Camp awesome!

Why we stopped, deleted 18 months worth of AI work and shifted to a data product mindset

Marnix van de Stolpe is a Product Owner at an e-commerce company in the area of data science. One could say, that he likes to be ‘on the move’ in the companies he works for. Started as a financial analyst, moved to forecasting, then became a data scientist at pricing, after which he became a product owner. He’s now in that role for the last 3.5 years but switched teams a few times and thereby kept on the move.

Marnix will share the story of how he joined a data science team in 2022. The team was developing a solution that was too focused on the delivery of a data-science metric, which made them lose track of the goal to track-, or solve a clear customer or business problem.

He will talk about how he came to the difficult decision to throw out 18 months of data science work, switch to a human-centered, product approach instead, and the challenges that came with it.

Consider this story an introduction to set the stage for more questions: Marnix has proven to be very open and won't shy away from difficult topics. Plus, he has gained more and wildly different experiences since that specific example.

'What I've learned from working with >200 product leaders'

Martijn Versteeg  left his EdTech company after five years as founder and CPO. Sounds good, right?

But that’s not the whole story. Along the way, I made more mistakes than I can count. Founder bias, innovating under delivery pressure, tough calls on underperforming PMs—the list goes on. And I felt alone.

So I found other product leaders like you and me and built a peer group. This group gave me the insights (and reality checks) I needed. Best. Decision. Ever. The impact was so strong that my personal growth hack is now a community of 20+ peer groups across Europe (Amsterdam, Berlin, London and Remote).

What happens in our groups is strictly confidential. In this session, for the first time ever, I’m bringing you the top insights and tools I’ve gathered from working directly with 200+ product leaders.

First, I’ll share tips, tactics, and strategies. Then, we’ll dive into workshopping your challenges.

I have one rule, though: Joining my session means committing to taking at least one improvement action based on what we discuss. Because if more knowledge were the answer, we’d all be billionaires with perfect six-packs by now.

We hope this has you fired up for the big day—and hopefully sparked some ideas for a session of your own! Over the past few editions, we’ve seen it time and time again: if one person in the room has wrestled with a particular challenge, chances are a whole bunch of others have too. So don’t hold back! When it’s time to call for sessions, step up and share your story. Product Camp wouldn’t be Product Camp without you—let’s make this one unforgettable, together.
